Pizzeria Davide opened a little over three weeks ago to great success. Such great success, that they sold out of large pizzas and small pizza boxes. The pizza shop, or window really, is from the team behind the delectable DiAnoia's Eatery, which immediately raises expectations.
You can't miss Pizzeria Davide, because the area around the window is painted in bold colors that mimic the Italian flag. The pizza window is located behind DiAnoia's Eatery, so you only have to travel a few more steps to find a slice of mouthwatering pizza. They offer both pick up and delivery to select neighborhoods, so everyone can have easy access to pizza.
One of my favorite items from DiAnoia's is their homemade bread that's basically a huge pizza crust topped with olive oil and parmesan. When you dip it in their whipped ricotta, it is heavenly. Based on the pizza bread, I knew Pizzeria Davide's crust would be just as perfect. I decided on a cacio e pepe pizza with mozzarella, burrata, and tomatoes. Just like the pizza bread, the crust was fluffy, yet crispy with a few slightly burnt spots that added an extra layer of crunch.
The rest of the pizza lived up to the crust. The burrata was worth the few extra dollars, as having two layers of cheese added a richness to the pizza. The tomatoes then added a pop of freshness that helped cut through the cheese when it got heavy. It was the ideal combination. I highly recommend customizing your pizza with the almost 30 different toppings that Pizzeria Davide has available, such as pancetta, prosciutto, ricotta, and arugula.
A week or so after having the cacio e pepe pizza, I ordered the Old World pizza, which is a red pizza with provolone and parmesan and I definitely preferred the former. The tomato sauce on the Old World pizza was a bit too sweet, and really, for me, it's all about the cheese. Not that I didn't enjoy it, the crust was still perfection and the cheese was gooey. I just don't think I would order it again. I'm looking forward to trying the white pizza with mortadella, truffle ricotta, hot peppers, and pistachios next time I visit.
When I saw mozzarella sticks on the menu, I knew I had to order them as they're one of my favorite greasy appetizers. These mozzarella sticks were anything but greasy. Upon first bite they were delightfully crispy. When you pulled the stick apart, you could see that the cheese was perfectly melted and delightfully stringy.
Pittsburgh has been lacking a gourmet pizza delivery option and Pizzeria Davide has filled that void. It's made it onto my regular rotation and I can't wait to return to try the endless combinations of toppings.
